It has come to the District's attention that some of the new residents on McCandless Drive were
not aware that their school of residence was changed to Randall Elementary School back on September 24, 2013. The district updated the district website's school locator database in late February 2014 so the residents' complaint has some validity. Based on communication with both developers, the district learned that D.R. Horton began sales in January 2013, and at that time the boundaries were not changed; the school of residence was Zanker. Taylor Morrison started their sales on November 1, 2013 but was aware of the school change that occurred on September 24, 2013 through their title company. Hence, MUSD recommended to the Board of Education an exception to the district's attendance boundaries for some of the properties along McCandless Drive. The District will now accept enrollment requests for Zanker Elementary School from families that have a sales contract by November 1, 2013. The following limitations apply for these new residents: 1) This exception only applies to residents who have a sales contract signed on or before November 1, 2013. For all properties purchased after Nov. 1, 2013, the School of Residence is Randall Elementary School. 2) This exception is limited to enrollment for the 2014-15 school year, beginning August 18, 2014. Qualifying students who enroll for the 2014-15 school year will be allowed to stay at Zanker until a new elementary school is built in the transit area. For initial enrollment in any school year beyond 2014-15, all transit area students are assigned to Randall Elementary School. For students who fit this exception window, enroll a student at Zanker for 2014-15, and have younger siblings, those younger siblings will be allowed to enroll at Zanker Elementary School in future years. At a special meeting on October 21st, the Board of Trustees approved a contract to purchase 6.7 acres of land on McCandless Drive from the City of Milpitas for $20.77 million dollars. This agreement represents years of community involvement and negotiations. Our current and past board members deserve our appreciation and thanks for staying persistent towards the goal of building a new school.
Once the soil tests and state approval of our architectural designs are approved, we can begin to build our New Elementary School on McCandless in the Transit Area. We plan to open the new school in 2019. Some dreams are years in the making, and this is certainly the case of the McCandless school site. For over a decade, our vision of a new elementary school has been certain, and unwavering. But as life has taught each of us, clarity of purpose does not guarantee an easy path to achievement. Just because your work is true and just, does not mean it will be easy…and that is when perseverance must match purpose.
On October 21, 2014, the Board of Education approved the purchase and sale agreements on the McCandless property, and with the City Council’s action, we officially turned a long-held vision into reality. Consider this: in a short period of time, we will welcome to this new school the graduating class of 2028! We should all be proud of the City of Milpitas and the many positive changes that are taking place around us at this time. BART is coming to our community, and bringing with it businesses, more homes, more families and more children who, we believe, deserve, and shall receive, a world class education. Our community is bustling with growth and energy, and our District stands ready to match this growth with programs, services and, now after all these years, a new school. On behalf of the Board of Education and the students and staff members who we strive to represent, on behalf of the community that voted to support our facilities bond and provide the funds needed to update and construct school facilities, we are honored to be part of the leadership team that pushed past controversies and challenges to make this new school a reality. We thank our Superintendent and his staff for their tireless commitment to this project and the thousands of kids who, for years to come, will attend school in their neighborhood.
