SAN JOSE, CA – The beginning of the school year can be a stressful time for students and parents, especially those who are transitioning to a new grade, new school, or for families that are new to the area completely. For this reason, the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) is releasing a six-part informational series, entitled "Navigating Public Schools in Santa Clara County," to help families and newcomers across the county.
The articles feature different back-to-school topics that will equip families with information to achieve positive outcomes and maximize opportunities for their children to increase academic achievement during the 2017-18 school year.

    • Drugs, Brain & Behavior:  The Science of Addiction - A presentation by Mark Stanford, Ph.D. from the Santa Clara County Department of Alcohol and Drug Services Addiction Medicine Division. Dr. Stanford share that alcohol and other drug use begins with an individual’s conscious choice, but addiction is not simply "a lot of alcohol and other drug use." Based on advances in neuroscience, the evidence is that drug addiction is a chronic, and for many people, reoccurring disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use that results from prolonged effects of drugs on the brain.  This presentation reviews the new science of addiction and the implications for treatment.
