Common Core Standards / CSS Report Cards

CCSS REPORT CARDS

Purpose
With the transition to the Common Core State Standards, there was a need to design a new report card aligned to the new curriculum and assessment changes. With this goal in mind, a Report Card Advisory Committee was formed and tasked with developing a tool that captures and reports student academic progress in a clear and effective manner.

The MUSD Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Report Card was first implemented as part of a field test at many of our elementary schools during the 2013 - 2014 academic year.  Parents, teachers, and administrators were encouraged to complete surveys to provide feedback on the organization and content of the new report card. The report card committee used this data to make additional revisions for 2014- 2015.

New Changes
The two new changes in the CCSS Report Card for 2014 - 2015 are in the way we mark the Academic Content Standards and English Learner Progress.

1. Marking Progress in the Academic Content Standards
The expected depth or level of understanding of the grade level Common Core State Standards is measured against the end of the school year proficiency NOT against the end of the trimester proficiency.

Marks
(4) Thorough Understanding >  a 4 was formerly  Exceeding the Standards
(3) Adequate Understanding> a 3 was formerly  Mastery of the Standards
(2) Partial Understanding > a 2 was formerly  Expected Performance
(1) Minimal Understanding > Formerly known as Area of Concern
N/A Not Applicable

2. Marking ELD English Language Development
All English Learners will receive a mark to demonstrate their level of attainment of English as a second language AND also their understanding of the Language Arts content. In English Language Development, the marks are:

Emerging> Formerly known as Beginning/Early Intermediate
Expanding> Formerly known as Intermediate
Bridging> Formerly known as Early Advanced/Advanced

Previous Changes Implemented in 2013 - 2014
  • Length - The report card for each grade level is more concise and was reduced to two pages.
  • Standards  - Alignment  changed from the old California Academic Standards to the new Common Core State Standards. Subject areas are broken down and organized by strand or domain. Students are graded in content/skill descriptors within each strand/domain.
  • Grading Key -  The new system is based on a Growth Model with a 4-1 scale similar to the one that will be used by Smarter Balance Assessments, the tests that will replace the California State Tests (CSTs).
  • Habits of Success - To align with 21st Century Skills, the previous “Life Long Learning” skills have been updated and are under the heading titled, “Habits of Success; Lifelong Learning, 4 C’s.”  The 4Cs stand for Collaboration, Communication, Creativity and Critical Thinking.

Next Steps
Our Elementary Report Card Advisory Committee plans to continue to meet  to review stakeholders’ input and make the necessary revisions to our report card.
