What is a Certificated Substitute?

• A Certificated substitute teacher serves as the classroom teacher when a teacher is absent or a teacher has not been hired.

How do I become a Certificated Substitute Teacher?

• Here are the steps to a Substitute Teacher Permit application:
• Fingerprint for the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.  Here is the link to the fingerprinting process.
• Go to the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing Website to create an educator account.
• Order Official transcripts showing the conferral of a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. This satisfies both the degree requirement and the Basic Skills Requirement beginning 6/29/2024.
• Register at our SCCOE website.
• Go to Edjoin and complete an MUSD application to become a certificated substitute teacher.

What is a Classified Substitute?

• A Classified substitute serves in a Classified position (secretary, custodial, maintenance, nutritional staff) when that staff member is absent or the position is vacant.

How do I become a Substitute Classified Employee?

• Step 1: Complete an Edjoin Application for the position or positions that you would like to be a substitute employee.
• Step 2: Apply for any Classified Substitute position.
• Step 3: HR or the Hiring Department will contact you to set up a time to assess your qualifications.
• Step 4: After screening, you will be contacted for an interview.
• Step 5: If you meet the interview/screening requirements, a member of the HR team will onboard you as a Classified Substitute.

What is the pay rate for Classified Substitute Employees?

• Classified Substitutes will be paid between Steps 1 and 3 of the appropriate salary schedule, depending upon experience and District need.  Please refer to the Classified Salary Schedule (Page 2 - lists hourly rate).
