'Building bridges, not walls' to further our learning opportunities

We are nearly into the second month of the new year, and more than a quarter of the way through the 21st century, time is precious. Presence is precious and relationship matters in learning. In difficult and swiftly changing times, we deepen our understanding of what being in community means to education. The current economic challenges in state funding for education require us to be strategic in how we increase resources by achieving savings, generating revenue, and reducing costs. We know we can do this through our commitment to Building a Culture of We, and as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “build[ing] bridges, not walls.”
Our MUSD Team is focused on our 5 Strategic Commitments, which have yielded more personalized learning paths for students such as project based learning, digital arts and communication, dual enrollment in college and high school, world languages, eSports, math talks, AI exploration, makerspaces, new sports opportunities, and more. We see these learning experiences in classrooms throughout MUSD, as well as in new school programs such as the MUSD Middle College High School, Randall World Languages School, and the transformation of MUSD Adult Education into the MUSD Workforce Development Center. Our investment in innovation is essential to our success in assuring all learners have opportunities for careers that matter to each of them.
Our school and department teams are exploring and developing strategies for resources that will bolster our efforts in the lean times ahead. We know that we can count on our community and industry partners for ideas and collaboration in bridging challenges with opportunity, and ensuring there are no walls that might hinder capacity building. Together we are forging multiple pathways that afford students the opportunity to explore all facets of human discovery and experience. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s son, Martin Luther King, III, said, “building bridges -- bridges of trust and understanding, bridges of mutual respect and goodwill, bridges of hope and opportunity. That’s what we who believe in his Dream must be about today.” That is what Building a Culture of We is about in MUSD.
In community,
