Positive Coaching

Coaching is all about positive character development – helping our young athletes develop strong work ethics, set and achieve goals, learn about team spirit, practice  perseverance, get exercise, and (most importantly) have fun!.  These outcomes will benefit players on and off the field - now and for years to come.  You, the coach, play a crucial role in setting the stage for this season to be all about positive experiences and life lessons.  Rise above mere competition and make the game about developing each player for a life well lived.  Here are some resources to help get you started…

Athletes Coach Hub

A compendium of timely and topical articles of interest to athletic coaches with links to specific sports sites.  Articles are categorized by topic, such as injury, nutrition, and prevention.

National Alliance for Youth Sports

The National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) advocates for positive and safe sports and activities for children. NAYS offers programs and services for everyone involved in youth sports experiences, including professional administrators, volunteer administrators, volunteer coaches, officials, parents and young athletes.

Let's Move!

Let's Move!

First Lady Michelle Obama’s signature program Let's Move! invites all of us to work together to combat the childhood obesity epidemic.  We all have a part to play – community leaders, child care operators, after school programs, faith based programs, municipalities, public, private and charter schools, museums, gardens, Native American tribes and organizations, health care professionals, and of course, parents and family members!  Go to www.letsmove.gov  to see how you can sign on to help bring positive change to your community.   There are a lot of great resources on this site, including:

Parks & Recreation Connections

Parks and Recreation professionals play an important role in youth development in our community.  Not only do you provide critical after school options for children and families, you work on a broader level maintaining and upgrading existing public playgrounds and designing new child-friendly public spaces.  Two professional organizations can support your valuable work:

The California Park & Recreation Society provides career development, networking, and resources and is the public advocate for California Park and Recreation professionals.  This website features the following topic areas:

Education– includes a training calendar for parks and recreation professionals

Networking – find your CPRS region and community

Resources – includes fact sheets for subjects such as competencies, playgrounds and youth

Advocacy – current legislation updates and information

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA)’s mission is to advance parks, recreation, and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people.  This site hosts a broad array of subject areas, including:

Of particular interest to recreation professionals who work with children and youth is the three year initiative 10 Million Kids Outdoors.  Join the NRPA and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF)’s social movement to take back the great outdoors for our children – fight back against childhood obesity and the overuse of technological devices – get kids outside moving, playing and exploring!  Click the link above to see how you can commit to the cause!
